About
Dahlia House

At Dahlia House Publishing, we believe that every life has a story worth telling—and some stories are best told in verse. Our mission is to bring personal journeys to life through the art of poetry, blending memory, reflection, and emotion into unforgettable memoirs.

We focus on memoirs in verse: works that combine the intimacy of autobiography with the elegance and power of poetry. Each book is a journey through moments, memories, and reflections, capturing the essence of life one line at a time. Our catalog celebrates authentic voices, introspective storytelling, and literary artistry.

We believe poetry has the power to illuminate the ordinary and transform personal experiences into shared human understanding. Dahlia House Publishing is dedicated to giving voice to stories that inspire, resonate, and linger long after the last line is read.

Meet the Founder & Author

J. Birrueta, a California native, is a writer, poet, and founder of Dahlia House Publishing who transforms life’s trials into words that endure. Raised largely on her own, she discovered early that resilience grows from hardship and strength emerges in solitude. By eighteen, she was supporting herself while pursuing her education, eventually earning a degree in Social Psychology from the University of California, and a Juris Doctorate—shaping the reflective, honest voice that flows through her work.

Through memoirs in verse, she explores absence, resilience, and the reclamation of one’s voice, capturing memory, emotion, and the quiet courage of the human spirit. Her poetry turns hardship into art, illuminating both vulnerability and enduring strength.

A lover of animals, poetry, music, and the outdoors, she draws inspiration from moments of freedom, reflection, and connection. Through her writing and publishing, she shares stories of struggle, resilience, and personal transformation, giving voice to experiences that heal, empower, and reveal the enduring light within us all.

Raised by Absence

Raised by Absence is a memoir told through poetry—an intimate collection of verses that explores abandonment, resilience, and the journey of reclaiming one’s voice.

Through deeply personal poems, the author reflects on a childhood shaped by maternal absence and the challenges of growing up without the support every child and young adult deserves. Each verse captures moments of struggle, survival, and self-discovery, revealing how hardship can forge strength and determination.

More than a story of pain, Raised by Absence is ultimately a story of resilience. It traces the path of a young woman who learned to stand on her own, build a life through perseverance, and transform silence into expression through poetry.

Serving as a reflection on the author’s life journey so far, this collection lays the foundation for future memoirs in verse that will explore the defining hardships and turning points that shaped her path.

The Raised by Absence Series

While Raised by Absence reflects on the author’s life journey as a whole, future volumes will explore the defining hardships and pivotal moments that shaped her story—each one revealing deeper layers of resilience, survival, and the reclaiming of voice.
